Finding answers to the Plastic Problem
We are in the midst of a pollution crisis caused by plastic waste in our environment. It is a huge problem that will persist for hundreds of years with microplastics now entering food chains, eco systems and water sources.
While more countries have taken up recycling, the use of plastics has increased exponentially. We need more innovative solutions to tackle the growing mountains of waste and stop the damage plastic is doing to our environment.
At Refiniti we have been able to develop our own unique refining technology to transform waste plastics into feedstock for the petrochemical industry. We have overcome the challenges that have prevented existing industry processes from utilising pyrolysis oil to make new products.
Dirty and contaminated post-consumer waste can now be utilised to create a stable and pure hydrocarbon liquid that is suitable for all purposes, even creating food or medical grade products.
At Refiniti we strongly support all options to reduce plastic waste and increase sustainability. Our goal is to create even more possibilities in the field of recycling. We recognise that all avenues should be explored and some may be only a temporary solution on our journey to true sustainability. What is clear, is that we must do everything we can.
We can minimise the use of plastics. If we use less, then less is wasted. However, the use of plastics is deeply entrenched, and we even depend on them. They have delivered huge benefits and are engineered to do so. Today there isn’t a viable way to reduce use to zero via substitution or abstinence, without a huge impact on many lives and the environment.
Every time an item is re-used this will help in the goal to reduce plastics, but there are limited opportunities for many forms of plastics. Ultimately most plastics end up damaged and unfit for purpose, at which point it becomes waste. What then?
We can move to a circular economy. The ultimate solution is to reduce the consumption of raw materials and make new products from old plastics with minimum energy input. However, traditional mechanical recycling is not viable for the majority of plastics because of contamination and composite materials downgrading the quality of output. This is where the new field of feedstock recycling can play a part in chemically converting the plastic back to oil-based feedstocks to make new products.
For plastics, this is about destruction and conversion to energy via a form of incineration. While this does deal with the waste, it is a source of fossil derived CO2 contributing to global warming. In some cases, it can be shown that fuels derived from plastics are less carbon intensive to traditional oil-based fuels, so it could present a stepping stone to improved sustainability and a lower carbon economy.
We have developed our own unique refining technology that converts waste plastic and tyre into feedstock for the petrochemical sector. We have achieved this by solving the chemical conundrum that prevents existing industry processes from using pyrolysis oil to make new products.
Dirty and contaminated post-consumer waste can be refined using pyrolysis oil. We can produce a stable and pure liquid hydrocarbon that is ready for catalysis and conversion.
Our patented chemical separation technology removes the chemical components that are responsible for catalyst poisoning, instability and equipment fouling.
The majority of our refining process is carried out at ambient temperatures and pressures to minimise the carbon footprint and offer a more sustainable approach, as opposed to using crude oil alone.
